Hello! My name is Chandra H. Jackson. Thank you for visiting my website! Since you're reading this, I'm assuming you're looking for lessons for you or your child. How exciting! I have been teaching students ages 3+ from beginners to advanced levels for over 15 years. I find so much joy in each student's unique journey! Please allow me to share a little about my background in music, credentials, and teaching philosophy so you can decide if I might be a good fit for you!
I grew up in Hyde Park, Utah in a home filled with music. In the midst of family jam sessions with our many instruments playing and arranging music in many genres including classical, fiddle, and hymns, my love of music was born. Later I decided to pursue music as my career and graduated with my bachelor’s in violin performance from Utah State University in 2017. Following a couple gap years of working and moving to Arizona, I completed my master’s degree from Arizona State University in 2021, also in violin performance. Along with teaching, I currently play with the Arizona chapter of the Millennial Choirs and Orchestras, Symphony of the Southwest, and am working on some compositions.
I feel so blessed with the many opportunities my journey with music has opened to create amazing memories, skills, and relationships. I seek to pass this on to my students! As a teacher, I strive for music to be a tool to build and uplift people. I work to create a positive and encouraging atmosphere where my students feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and progress. However, advancing students to harder material before they have adequately mastered needed skills creates frustration and discouragement. To avoid this and instead create a positive, fulfilling experience, I require practicing and mastery of concepts before I pass off assignments so students can be successful in accumulating and using their skills! In addition to our core curriculum (I use a mix of Suzuki, I Can Read Music, Solos for Young Violinists, and other method books as appropriate), students get to have an active role in shaping their musical journey by selecting pieces they are interested in (movie scores, pop tunes, traditional songs, etc.).
I understand that the relationship between a student and teacher during the childhood and teen years is a triangle between parents, the student, and the teacher. I strive to give constructive and meaningful feedback about students’ work and be clear about what needs to happen for them to move forward. I welcome any and all feedback from parents about what’s working for students and especially what they (or you as a parent) are frustrated with or unclear on. This helps me make adjustments in lessons and assignments to fit students’ needs and have good conversations with students and parents about necessary steps towards progress. Overall, my goal is for students to love and work hard at developing the wonderful skill of music. It will serve them well in their lives and I am honored to be a part of each student's journey.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Chandra
